Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive Nairobi

On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport we will be there to meet you and assist with immigration formalities. After clearing customs you will be transferred the short distance to the Norfolk Hotel. 

At the Norfolk a band of traditional African dancers will escort you to a private check-in area and welcome drinks will be served. Probably Kenya's most famous hotel - and certainly one of its oldest - the Norfolk has been drawing the rich and famous to its hallowed doors since they first opened on Christmas Day 1904. In many respects, Nairobi grew up around the Norfolk, which occupies a central but quiet location opposite the National Theatre.

After check-in there will be a short safari briefing by your professional safari guide. There’s time to freshen up in your room where a fruit basket and a welcome gift awaits.

This afternoon there is an option to visit the Karen Blixen Museum and Giraffe Centre.

The Karen Blixen Museum was once part of Karen Blixen’s vast coffee estate; ‘Mbogani’ was Karen’s home from 1917 until 1931. The house and grounds were made famous by the filmOut of Africa  and have been restored by the Danish community of Kenya. Visitors have a glimpse of typical colonial life in Kenya at the turn of the 20th century.

The Giraffe Centre is the headquarters for AFEW, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. Made famous by ‘Daisy Rothschild’, a giraffe calf rescued from Soi, on the border of Western Kenya, the Giraffe Centre was established in 1983 and the breeding programme has been a great success. Visitors can watch these gentle giants at eye level from a raised platform and hand-feed them.

Your welcome dinner this evening is at the Norfolk. There is a choice of four restaurants at the hotel; they range from the grandest in Kenya to casual.   All have very good food.

Day 2 - Nairobi - Lewa Downs

After breakfast transfer to Nairobi's Wilson Airport for your flight to Lewa Downs. Fly northwards through the rift and up the western wall of the great escarpment on to the Laikipia plateau. The Laikipia region is a broad swathe of game rich grasslands and hills that reach Mount Kenya to one side and the wild deserts of the north to the other.

On arrival take a game viewing drive en route to your private luxury mobile camp.

As you arrive at camp, your camp manager and staff are there to welcome you with cold refreshing towels and drinks.     

Your personal tent attendant will make sure that the cotton sheets on your large, comfortable bed are crisp and that a hot water bottle is slipped beneath your duvet on a chilly night. While you are at supper, he will have turned down your bed and drawn around your mosquito net. The tents are solar powered so that you have two bright bedside reading lamps and an overhead light in your bedroom and bathroom. Your tent attendant will be at hand to make sure that your traditional bucket shower is mixed to the perfect temperature for whatever time of day or night you choose to bathe. You have a fully flushing, ceramic toilet and even running water in the basin. He will take care of your laundry which will be delivered, weather permitting, to your tent each morning, pressed beautifully by an old fashioned charcoal iron. He will also take any shoes that require cleaning in the evening returning them to you with your morning tea or coffee. We will even prepare delicious picnics for you to take with you in to the bush if you so choose.

After freshening up, lunch is served al fresco. This afternoon is free to enjoy a siesta before embarking on a late afternoon game viewing drive.

Day 3 - Lewa Downs

Spend two full days losing yourself in the magical atmosphere of Lewa, which was one of Kenya’s original ranches and has been the home of the Craig family since 1924. The Conservancy is now one of East Africa's major conservation successes and is host to approximately 10% of Kenya’s endangered black rhino. Game viewing is exceptional with a variety of animals and you will also find several animal species not seen in the southern hemisphere, including reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra and the Gerenuk antelope with its long neck.

A wide variety of activities are available and your professional guide will be on hand to organise activities - ride on horseback alongside herds of giraffe, zebra and antelope, take a night game drive, walk with armed rangers, or take a camel ride with a local Samburu guide. 

In between game viewing there is the opportunity to visit the on-going conservation projects and also the craft centre run by the local community.

Day 5 - Lewa Downs - Ol Pejeta Conservancy - Mount Kenya

Today after breakfast drive a short distance to the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Take a game viewing drive through the sanctuary which is another example of the success of conservation efforts in Kenya. It is also the largest Black Rhino sanctuary in East Africa. One of the highlights here is a visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary where chimpanzees rescued from traumatic situations are being carefully nursed back to health so they can enjoy the rest of their days in the safety of a vast natural enclosure. This is the only place in Kenya to see these intelligent animals

After lunch at Sweetwaters, take a short drive to the famous Mount Kenya Safari Club.

Chukka drummers will escort you to a private check-in area and entertain you as you sip welcome cocktails. There will be a short equator crossing ceremony and certificates will be presented by the Chukka chief.

The rest of the afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the facilities at the club.

Day 6 - Mount Kenya

One of Kenya’s best known properties, Mount Kenya Safari Club is steeped in colonial history, with a past as colourful as its magnificent gardens. Originally built as a dream home by a wealthy New Yorker for her young French aviator husband, it quickly became a main focal point for the Happy Valley set of the 1930s. In 1959 William Holden and two friends turned it into one of the most exclusive clubs in the world with founding members including Sir Winston Churchill, Lord Louis Mountbatten, Robert Ruark, Lyndon Johnson, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.   

There are a variety of distractions for those staying at the Club – horseback riding, golf, trout fishing, tennis, visiting the adjacent wildlife sanctuary (base for the successful breeding programme of endangered bongo antelope), or just walking in the beautiful grounds. For those seeking total repose there is a heated swimming pool, and a health and beauty centre.

This evening your vehicle will collect you for a private dinner served in a beautiful setting at the edge of the River Likii.

The surrounding trees and bushes are lit with hurricane lanterns and at full moon the set glows with an almost luminescent silver light. Charcoal braziers ward off the night chill. The table setting is as elegant as any found in the world's finest restaurants with clusters of crystal glasses, gleaming silverware and dainty wild flower arrangements which grace starched white table linen. Dinner on the River Likii is a truly unforgettable experience.

Day 7 - Mount Kenya - Masai Mara

This morning transfer to Nanyuki for your flight to the Masai Mara, one of Africa’s greatest parks.

On arrival in the Mara take a game drive en route to your private camp. You may be rewarded with sightings of elephant, buffalo, giraffe and a host of other plains game.

The jewel in Africa’s crown the Masai Mara is host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. Her open savannah, woodlands and tree-lined rivers create an ecosystem which supports huge numbers of bird and mammal species. Lion are found in abundance throughout the park as are elephant, giraffe, a variety of gazelle species and zebra. Cheetah and leopard are also regularly seen and, if lucky, you may also spot rhino. The annual wildebeest migration traditionally is present in the Mara from July to September and at this time nature’s dramas unfold before your very eyes at every turn. As well as wildlife, the Masai Mara is also home to many members of the colourful Maasai tribe.

Relax at your camp and enjoy a cold drink before lunch is served. In the afternoon venture in to the park on a game drive.
This evening there will be a slide show and talk by a world renowned wildlife photographer who has made detailed studies of animal behaviour and the wildlife of this extraordinary continent.

Day 8 - Masai Mara

After an early morning wakeup call with coffee and biscuits served in the tents, transfer to a hot air balloon launch site.
As the balloon is inflated against the first rays of sunrise the pilot will go through safety procedures. Once aloft, the balloon floats gently over the plains, giving a bird’s eye view of the game below as the sun creeps slowly over the horizon. Spread beneath is a panorama of Africa – elephants looking improbably small, giraffe browsing amongst the treetops, antelope grazing, a pair of lionesses stalking a herd of wildebeest, and cheetah glancing up as the shadow of the huge balloon crosses their paths. After around one hour the balloon lands and nearby breakfast is already being prepared. he smells of bacon, sausages and eggs drift on the breeze as breakfast begins with platefuls of exotic Kenyan fruits and homemade pastries and, of course, glasses of bubbly to toast the flight in a tradition initiated by the Montgolfier brothers. 
Take a game viewing drive back to the camp to return in time for lunch.   
The early afternoon is free to relax and exchange stories of the morning adventures.
Later, depart for an afternoon game viewing drive. The game drive will end with sundowners at a specially chosen vantage point overlooking the Mara plains. Sundowners are a Kenyan tradition, originally enjoyed by the white settlers. Take in the beauty of the rapid sunset as it transforms the world in a matter of minutes. Waiters serve canapés and drinks as you enjoy the spectacular setting sun on the horizon.
Return to camp in time to freshen up before dinner.

Day 9 - Masai Mara

Full day of game viewing. 
Visit a Maasai Manyatta (homestead). Meet the elders as the women entertain with song and dance. Learn more about their ancient cultures and the traditional way of life of the Maasai tribe.
This evening a farewell dinner will be served under the stars.
A private and secluded clearing is prepared for an elegant dinner. As the sun swiftly sinks, the setting is illuminated by a magnificent log fire. Candles flicker in the darkness, throwing a golden light on starched white table cloths and miniature arrangements of local wild flowers. After a delicious dinner, retire to the crackling campfire where drinks are served and quietly absorbing the peace and beauty of an African night.
Surprise Option:
Suddenly the sound of the Maasai battle cry echoes through the night. From trees and scrub leap ochre warriors singing traditional songs in their deep humming voices. Watch their legendary gravity-defying leaps as their spearheads reflect the amber light of the flames.

Day 10 - Masai Mara - Nairobi

Today fly to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport. On arrival transfer to the Norfolk Hotel where we have reserved day rooms for you.     
The afternoon is free to relax by the pool. Sightseeing or a shopping excursion can be arranged.
Your farewell dinner is at the Carnivore Restaurant. The Carnivore is situated on the edge of Nairobi National Park and as the name suggests is a meat eater’s paradise. The focal point of the main restaurant is the ‘roasting pit’ where an enormous variety of meat is roasted on huge metal spears. Waiters bring these different meats to the table. Waiters continue their rounds until you admit defeat and lower your flag (provided on the table!). For the herbivores there is an extensive vegetarian menu. If you have any room left after the unlimited servings, a variety of sweets are on offer before mugs full of steaming Kenya coffee herald the end of the meal.
Later in the evening transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departure flight.
